The look of stone can add a lot of elegance and flare to any home and it may be easier than you think. If you are wondering how to build a stone patio on your own, consider these important points before starting:
In most cases you will need the following basic supplies: a hammer, chisel, sledgehammer, pointing trowel, mason's trowel, rubber mallet joiner, mortar, stones and lumber.
Choose a natural sedimentary, layered rock like flagstone, flat stone or bluestone for your patio.
Feel free to use either precut or natural stone.
Leave a ½ to ¾ inch gap between stones when laying out your patio.
Be sure to create a slight slope for drainage.
Be sure to lay your mortared patio on top of a firm concrete foundation to keep the stone from slipping, cracking and otherwise deteriorating.
Be sure to use at least a one inch mortar base.
Be sure to make forms to keep the mortar in place.
Always coat your stone with slurry (a creamy mixture of cement and water) to help your stone adhere better to the mortar.
Be sure to follow the directions on your mortar package carefully
