Garden Trellises and Cages

Garden trellises and cages basically are supports for climbing plants and vine vegetables to keep them off the ground as they grow. Usually the vine vegetables have a way of attaching themselves to these trellises and cages; other types of plants and vegetables will need to be tied onto the supports. Garden trellises are usually constructed of diagonal, horizontal, or vertical bars that are made of wood, plastic, or metal. They are available in various sizes and shapes.

A trellis in the garden is a very decorative element that will enhance any flower garden. Trellises and cages are easy to take care of and they are inexpensive to purchase. Wooden garden trellises, garden arches, wrought iron garden trellises, or a garden pergola can usually be purchased at most home and garden centers or nursery suppliers. The pressure treated wooden trellises should be used as they will last longer. Always choose the section of the garden where you have the correct sunlight and moisture for the flowers and vegetables of your choosing.

Trellises and cages are almost a necessity for certain garden vegetables. Some vertical vegetables such as vegetable garden peas and vegetable garden beans will need some sort of structure for climbing tall. The horizontal vegetable gardening crops such as cucumbers, melons, and squash will need trellises that are lower to the ground but high enough to keep them off the ground for cleaner and more defined crops.

There are several varieties of tomato that are classified as "indeterminate" meaning they will grow all season long. Tomatoes are best if they are supported by tomato cages, tomato ladders, or garden trellises because they will keep the fruit off the ground. Tomatoes classified as "determinate," those that grow to a definite height, produce all their fruit at one time and then stop growing will also benefit from these garden structures. The fruit will rot less often and be basically disease free.

Some gardeners prefer to grow "bush" varieties of vegetables because they take up less room. These varieties of squash, melons, and cucumbers will work better climbing on trellises if their fruit only reaches about 3 pounds each. You will probably have to train these crops to climb up and around cages or on trellises that are put together as a triangle.

Garden supply companies today have introduced new styles of vegetable cages and garden trellises. There are heavy-duty tomato cages that are classified as tomato towers and are much taller than the original conical style cage. There are A-frame supports, 3 panel trellises, bean towers, pea fences all of which will fold flat when you are not using them. These newer versions of garden cages and trellises will most likely work better than the old fashioned cone shaped wire cage and easy to store.

Patio Swing Covers

A Patio Swing is the favored place or corner where one likes to spend a few peaceful moments enjoying coffee, reading the newspaper or a savoring a cool drink with friends. This is reason enough to take proper care of your Patio Swing and not leave it uncovered in the open. The swing cushions and top cover will appear worn out and, if wooden, then it will require frequent polishing and termite treatment. The alternative to extra expenses is to purchase a high-quality Patio Swing Cover that will protect the swing from extreme temperatures, rain or dew. The material could be polyethylene with a top coating for longer life, or a tough and breathable polyester fiber. Since the swing is seldom removed indoors, the cover should be easily wiped cleaned or hosed down. If selecting a pre-made cover see that there are securing eyelets to tie the cover, to prevent it from being blown away.

If the swing is rustproof and you do not want to keep it covered, then a canopy and swing cushions covers could be made with waterproof vinyl or PVC coated materials. This will prevent the material from appearing mildewed. Fabrics treated with stain protection products like Scotchgard are another option for Swing Covers. For swing cushions and canopies one could use high-tech foam which, unlike conventional foam covers, do not get waterlogged if drenched in rain or dew. The water drains out from either side, presenting a dry appearance.

If using a Swing Cover to swathe the entire structure, then cushion covers can be of any material and color. The cover should be tied properly, covering every usable area. After all, a Patio Swing is not purchased every month.

How to Build a Stone Patio

The look of stone can add a lot of elegance and flare to any home and it may be easier than you think. If you are wondering how to build a stone patio on your own, consider these important points before starting:

In most cases you will need the following basic supplies: a hammer, chisel, sledgehammer, pointing trowel, mason's trowel, rubber mallet joiner, mortar, stones and lumber.
Choose a natural sedimentary, layered rock like flagstone, flat stone or bluestone for your patio.
Feel free to use either precut or natural stone.
Leave a ½ to ¾ inch gap between stones when laying out your patio.
Be sure to create a slight slope for drainage.
Be sure to lay your mortared patio on top of a firm concrete foundation to keep the stone from slipping, cracking and otherwise deteriorating.
Be sure to use at least a one inch mortar base.
Be sure to make forms to keep the mortar in place.
Always coat your stone with slurry (a creamy mixture of cement and water) to help your stone adhere better to the mortar.
Be sure to follow the directions on your mortar package carefully
If in doubt, print off step-by-step directions for how to build a stone patio from the internet, or take a class at your local home renovation center for directions.
Give yourself plenty of time to finish the project - you will need between 12-20 hours depending on your level of experience.

Dolly Parton - He´s animate (Full song)

Dolly Singing "He´s alive" at the 1989 CMA awards. Lyrics: The gates and doors were barred And all the windows fastened down I spent the night in sleeplessness And rose at every sound Half in hope of sorrow And half in fear the day Would find the soldiers breakin' through To drag us all away And just before the sunrise I heard something at the wall The gate began to rattle And a voice began to call I hurried to the window Looked down into the street Expecting swords and torches And the sound of soldiers' feet But there was no one there but Mary So I went down to let her in John stood there beside me As she told me where she'd been She said they've moved Him in the night And none of us know where The stone's been rolled away And now His body isn't there We both ran towards the garden Then John ran on ahead We found the stone and empty tomb Just the way that Mary said But the winding sheet they wrapped Him in Was just an empty shell And how or where they'd taken Him Was more than I could tell Oh something strange had happened there Just what I did not know John believed a miracle But I just turned to go Circumstance and speculation Couldn't lift me very high 'Cause I'd seen them crucify Him Then I saw Him die Back inside the house again The guilt and anguish came Everything I'd promised Him Just added to my shame When at last it came to choices I denied I knew His name And even if He was alive It wouldn't be the same But suddenly the air was filled With a strange and sweet ...

Recycled Metal Garden Art - Fun, Playful and Eco-Friendly

Avid gardeners are generally very green folk. They like digging in the dirt, recycling and composting, and easily incorporate other people's discards into their outdoor decor. When looking for interesting pieces to decorate their yards, recycled metal garden art is a popular choice.

Recycled metal garden art is a true reflection of the artist's personality and ingenuity. What may be trash to you or me is reborn in the hands of these eco-artists. One artist, Andrew Chase, makes amazing mechanical structures of giraffes, elephants and robots from recycled automobile and plumbing parts. He gets discarded engine and transmission parts from his local auto repair, and by combining these with plumbing pipes and fixtures he is able to create wonderful, moving creatures.

Old oil tanks and drums are quite commonly used to make metal garden art. Painted oil tanks that once supplied fuel to cottagers are cut down into brightly colored critters, including dogs with bones, dancing sheep or moose, lurking alligators and climbing frogs. For something a little different you can even add a diva or a devil!

In Haiti a growing crafts community is creating wonderful metal wall sculptures from flattened drums which were once used to transport oil or other products. After removing the ends these drums are flattened and then carved by hand into exotic works of art. Using only hammers, chisels and other simple tools, the artists carve elaborate, decorative designs out of the steel. Haitian drum art is world renowned and spreading in popularity. It makes a striking piece of wall art for inside the house or in the garden.

Saving bicycles from untimely graves a new breed of artists are using recycled bikes parts to create their art. Bike art has become so popular it is a genre of its own. With gears and wheels, nuts and bolts, spokes and bars, a bicycle is the perfect raw material for recycled metal art.

Part of the appeal of recycled metal garden art is the weathered and often rusted look of some of the pieces. Rusted metal has a natural, earthy feel to it and blends with the garden rather than making a loud statement. For this reason a lot of gardeners seek out pre-rusted metal art.

The ingenuity of artists working with recycled metal never ceases to amaze me. Add some recycled metal art to your yard and add instant character and charm.

Perennial Flowers - Tips For Growing Your Perennial Flower Garden

So, you are thinking about starting a new flower garden, but don't know where to begin? Perennial flowers make an excellent choice for a beautiful flower display, but in order to create a garden with the most impact, there are many factors to consider before planting your perennial flower garden.

Site Selection

When selecting a site for a perennial flower garden, you should be certain that it receives enough sunlight. Most perennial flowers thrive on six hours of sunlight a day or more. If you are stuck with a shady place, however, you can still grow some perennial flowers. You will just need to be careful of which varieties you choose, and make sure they are shade tolerant.

You also need to consider soil quality and drainage in your proposed perennial flower garden site. Avoid planting in areas with an abundance of weeds, as they will compete with the perennial flowers for needed nutrients and water. You should also avoid areas that have poor drainage. While perennial flowers will be able to survive in a wet area for a short period of time after a rain or watering, they will not survive in an area where there is standing water for long periods of time. Ideally, the soil in your perennial flower garden site will also be fluffy and rich, but if not, try to incorporate sufficient compost into the soil before you plant your flowers.

You should also consider foot traffic and children and pet play habits in the area you are considering establishing your perennial flower bed. Try to avoid planting your perennial flowers in an area where they will be trampled underfoot.

Flower Selection

Perennial flowers come in a wide array of colors, shapes and types, and the perennial flower gardener may quickly be overwhelmed by choices. One tip for making your flower selection is to consider how colors combine. Try not to choose flowers whose colors may clash (such as orange and pink), and instead focus on complementary colors in your garden (pinks and blues often make a beautiful combination).

You should also consider the height of different flower species. Try to make sure a tall perennial flower you have selected does not hide a smaller one behind it.

Finally, pay attention to the blooming period of the perennial flowers you are selecting. Most perennial flowers have a short blooming period lasting from two to four weeks, and for maximum impact you should coordinate the blooming periods of different perennial flowers.

Growing Habits of Perennial Flowers

If you are starting your perennial flowers from seed, you should be aware that it is unlikely you will see any flowers during their first year of growth. This is because most perennial flowers will put all their energy into root and plant growth during the first year, but during the second year (and future years) you can expect a beautiful display. If you do not think you have the patience to wait a full two years to see flowers, consider planting some annuals with your perennials so that you will have some color in your garden during the first year.

You can also try using transplants you first year, in order to get your perennial flower garden off to a quick start. If you decide to use transplants, try to select plants that are not in bloom when you plant them, since this is not a good time to establish them in your garden. Also avoid transplants that have pale or yellow stems and leaves. Try to do your transplanting on a day which is relatively cool and overcast for the best results, and be sure to water the plants well after transplanting and continue watering until the plants have become well established.

Although starting a new garden can be a challenge, by following the few suggestions outlined above, you should be well on your way to creating a beautiful, and long lasting, perennial flower garden.

Lawn Mower Repair

Lawn mowers need repairs from time to time depending on the extent of damage suffered. Maintaining a lawn mower needs meticulous planning.

Repairing lawn mowers can be time-consuming, and trying to repair one that frequently suffers damage can take up much time, which in a majority of circumstances can eat into the total mowing season.

Most frequently, when a mower fails to function properly, one would likely trace the problem by its symptoms. For example, if a spark plug needs to be replaced, one might speculate that the engine is failing to receive gas, or there could be snags in the carburetor. One of the key aspects related to lawn mowers is that maintenance is of greater importance than repair, and this holds the key to the smooth functioning of a mower.

The basic thing that needs to be remembered is that after mowing is complete, the engine and the blades should be painstakingly tidied. The mower as a rule should not be cleaned with water, but scraping the underside of the deck and making use of an air compressor to flush the air-filter, carburetor and the engine block and pulleys is quite an effective way of preserving the appearance and operation of the mower.

If a problem is serious, one should contemplate whether investing money to fix the mower is a viable option. In case the trouble is related to the engine, one should check whether the engine is receiving the required fuel or verify whether it is operating correctly with the ignition.
